Load the Game you want to Add Cheats for and then go to Options ▶ Cheats.

 

The Cheats Dialog will now be open. Right click in the content area and select Add button either Game Genie or Pro-Action Replay from the context menu. It is the only NES emulator that allows you to add and use Game Genie and Pro Action Replay Codes plus multiple cheat codes on one adding.

Game Genie

 

When multiple codes are necessary enter them here separated with a dash character. Example: xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx. You can have 3 codes Maximum per Game Genie cheat.

Pro Action Replay Codes

 

Provided in a specialized text format: <address>-<value>. In this format, addresses are represented in four digit hexadecimal number, and values are represented in two digit hexadecimal. For example 0023-44 would write the value 0x44 to the location 0x0023. You may have up to six codes in the list.

 

Options are useful when a single code provides multiple values for a user select from.  Input the code in the format xxxx-??, then you may add extra values in the format <value>, <description> in the list on the right. Again values are represented as two digit hexadecimal.

Adding Tree Grouping

 

When adding many cheats to a game, it may be helpful to organize certain cheats into categories for faster navigation.

Infinite\Health
or:
Infinite\Health\Player 1
Infinite\Health\Player 2
 

Be mindful of the fact that while parents can be shared, a parent node itself cannot contain a cheat. For example, you can not use Infinite\Ammo with Infinite\Ammo\Player 1 etc.

The NES had third party cheating devices known as the Game Genie and Pro Action Replay. The cheat file database included with Jnes is composed in a way that allows you to tell the difference between codes for these devices.

Game Genie cheat codes are encoded in a special format and modify the game code or ROM, not the game memory. So when you see [Game Genie] in the Cheat Dialog Note section, you know that the cheat needs to be loaded before the gameplay.

 

The Pro Action Replay Cheat codes on the other hand modifies the game memory, not the ROM, so they don't need to be injected into the game before the game is loaded. So when you see [Pro-Action-Replay] in the Cheat Dialog Note section, you know that means its a Pro Action Replay Code can just be enabled and used right away.

Access the Cheats Dialog

 

In order to facilitate enabling cheat codes before and after a game has loaded, there are two ways to access the cheats menu for a specific game.

 

  1. Right Mouse click on the games name to open the context menu and select Cheats.

  2. While a game is loaded go to menu Options ▶ Cheats or just hold down Ctrl and press C on your Keyboard.

The Cheats dialog will now be open where you can navigate the tree and enable or disable cheats. Make sure you read the notes section for each cheat, certain categories only allow one cheat option at a time. Once you have all your codes enabled just close the Cheat dialog by clicking on the Windows close button.

 

Since Game Genie codes work on the ROM where the program data is stored, it is recommended that you enable or disable the codes before loading the game. If you notice a game genie code you enabled is not working, or a disabled one still active this could be why.

Tree Group Options

 

Group many cheats together into a tree provides an easy way to find categories such as Infinite, Max, Start On, Have or Have All, Player 1 and Player 2 Cheats. You can tell a group is present by the symbol on the left hand side of the cheat name check box in the Cheat dialog menu.
 

Just click on the symbol left of the Cheats check box and the tree grouping will then open showing you all the different options inside. You can enable and disable cheats in groups by either double clicking on the cheats name or single clicking on the cheats name check box. Another option is to just click on the cheat tree group symbol to enable all within but be careful! There may be notes stating to use only one code at a time within the group.

There can be multiple tree groupings within the main group (subtree groupings if you like) allowing a neater and better managed cheat dialog that is clutter free. You will often find PAR Extensions inside the tree groupings also but we will address those later on down. To close the tree groupings just click back on the top symbol on left hand side of the cheats name check box and it will collapse to the original main position.

Pro Action Replay Extensions

 

When a cheat has extensions, also known as modifier codes, it lets you select effect of the cheat from a list of options. For example, in Contra there is a cheat that allows you to select the specific type of weapon you have. You can tell a code has extended values when the text contains an arrow => symbol at the end of the label.

To make a selection just double click on the cheat name, and the Cheat Extension Dialog will then open showing you all the different options you can have.

 

Click on the value you would prefer, and then click the Ok button to return to the main Cheats dialog. Now back in the main Cheats dialog the item will reflect the option you selected. To disable a Pro Action Replay code you need to uncheck it and close the game to take the cheat out of the memory, just disabling the cheat may not be enough.

In Jnes 1.1 the Cheat Search function was introduced and incorperated into the system section of the menu. This search functionality allows you to create your own cheat codes by searching through the memory of a game for specific values you may see on screen, and then testing changes.

Load the Game you want to search cheats for and then go to System ▶ Cheat Search.

When recording a movie, Jnes stores game play data in a binary file which contains the state of the NES plus your input. If you are just interested in capturing movies for yourself or sharing them with people who have Jnes, this is an effective way.

However if you want to share your video on YouTube.com or another site, you will need to convert your Jnes movie file to a traditional video file format. Jnes supports conversion to AVI and will contain the video and audio of your gameplay. For smaller video file sizes, you can use a video compression that comes with Windows such as Cinepak or Microsoft Video 1 which provide a reliable experience. If storage space is a concern you can try XviD, just be aware that you have to close the status window it opens or it will crash the application when the movie finishes.
 

Here is how you can convert a movie file to AVI:

 

  • Open the game you captured the movie from

  • Navigate menu File ▶ Capture ▶ Movie ▶ Play

  • Select the movie file you recorded

  • Click Save As and choose a location to store your AVI file

  • In the codec selection dialog pick one of the codecs mentioned earlier

  • You may now Start playback and it will store the video

To enable the artwork browser mode navigate to:

Options ▶ Settings ▶ Rom Browser

 

Once enabled the Rom Browser will display large images instead of default file small file icons.

Configuring the artwork is a manual effort left to you, to change a game's image:
Select the Game ▶ Right Click ▶ Change Artwork

It's that simple! The actual artwork files you select for a game are then stored in the "artwork" subdirectory where Jnes executes from. Jnes simply stores the image with the same name as the ROM file you selected so it may load it later.

While no artwork is included with Jnes, Gent has generously put together a box art pack for US region games and it is provided as a download below. You are of course encouraged to download any artwork yourself not included in this pack.
